The moon was high. I sat on the black sand. The tide washed over my legs, unfirming the earth beneath me when it ebbed. No one saw I was gone. Nor did they see the whale, huge and white, some ways from the shore. Strange that she should come so close to land. I thought to call out to my mates but no: the whale was meant for me, a sign that I was not alone.

13th—Extensive drilling practice with great guns and small arms.

15th—Shared night watch duty with Abbas. A long and quiet night. Ever since the bonfire at St. Helena, we have lost our ease. I misjudged him, I know this now.
